New Sewing Machines

On a rainy Friday afternoon members of the Airline Ambassadors brought sewing machines to give out to the graduating students of the sewing classes.

The women were so happy to receive these machines. They had walked down the mountain in the rain and they now had an hour walk back up the mountain in the rain and mud carrying these heavy machines on
their heads but they were very, very happy!

SAN JORGE 4/15/08– Wednesday we had a very happy, colorful celebration for the 7th group of women to graduate from the sewing classes in San Jorge.

These women, many who do not speak Spanish and have not had the opportunity to go to school, were thrilled to receive a diploma for graduating from their three month class. The class is twice a week, three hours a session for three months.
After this class they can then participate in the next three month course for the graduates. On completion of that course, they receive a sewing machine at a very low cost. Thank you to everyone who donates sewing machines to this program. The money that is received for the sewing machines goes back to the class to pay for the teacher’s wages and the materials that they need.

The women cooked a delicious meal to celebrate and they festooned the room with homemade decorations and lots of flowers. We brought a cake to celebrate this great occassion.!

Another Class of Graduates

PANAJACHEL–A sewing class run at Headquarters recently completed and a graduation ceremony was held. The graduates were women from Tierra Linda and Panajachel. Sharon said “We had about a 50% drop out rate in this class but the young women from Tierra Linda were determined to finish. They walked half an hour down the mountain twice a week to go to classes, they came in the rain, they walked down very muddy paths but nothing deterred them and they were so happy to graduate. They are now going to continue with graduate classes and after that will receive their sewing machines.”

The graduation ceremony included certificates, balloons, chuchitos, and cake for this very happy day.

The names of the graduates and certificates were presented by Alberto, our staff instructor.
